How to accommodate allergy sufferers this Thanksgiving

If you're hosting Thanksgiving this year, you know first hand how stressful it can be to prepare for this big day. You're responsible for cleaning your home, making enough room to accommodate guests who are spending the night, preparing the menu and — most importantly — doing everything you can to ensure that your guests are happy and comfortable while they're at your house.

This can be especially complicated when your guests have allergies, as they may require specific accommodations in order to be healthy and safe.

Food allergies, for example, can be extremely dangerous, and people who suffer from them may even need to go to the emergency room if they come into contact with an allergen. That being said, you'll want to make sure ahead of time that you're aware of any special dietary restrictions so that you can avoid certain ingredients or make alternative dishes.

The Thanksgiving Day cuisine isn't the only thing that individuals with allergies have to worry about, though. Many people also have negative reactions to common household irritants, such as dust mites, pet dander, mold, tobacco smoke and pollen. With this in mind, it's a good idea to clean your residence thoroughly before guests arrive, using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to get rid of as many of these tiny particles as you can.

If you have guests spending the night who suffer from allergies, you also may want to consider purchasing allergenic bedding and an allergen air purifier for the room they'll be occupying to guarantee that they'll get a good night's sleep.
