Study: Asthma suffers 32 percent more likely to be allergic to cats

A new study conducted by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) reveals that people with asthma are 32 percent more likely to be allergic to cats than those who don't suffer from the chronic respiratory disease. Additionally, the number of asthmatics who are allergic to feline dander has doubled in the past 18 years.

"This study helps us better understand common trends in allergy and asthma, which can lead to improved diagnosis and treatment," said Dr. James Sublett, chair of the ACAAI indoor environment committee, in a press statement. "While it is unknown exactly why there has been an increase in asthma and allergy sufferers, it is thought a number of environmental factors can be responsible."

Although this particular set of data regarding pet dander is relatively new, medical professionals have known for quite some time that there's a link between asthma and allergies.

With Thanksgiving coming up, it's imperative for asthmatics and people who have severe allergies to be wary of heightened exposure to unfamiliar triggers as they attend the holidays at friends' and families' houses. That being said, if you're hosting Thanksgiving at your place this year, you should be prepared to accommodate your guests' needs and ensure that they aren't uncomfortable while they're in your home.
