Approved by the FDA two years ago, a bronchial thermoplasty could be the right life-changing procedure for those that suffer from asthma.
A bronchial thermoplasty reduces asthma attacks for those that suffer from asthma-related tendencies. It lessens the risk of attack by reducing the amount of the airway's smooth muscle. During an attack these walls swell and constrict airflow making breathing difficult.
The procedure involves heating a catheter to 150 degrees Fahrenheit through three surgical phases applied in the airway. Its effects have been proven to last up to five years.
According to statistics:
- 79 percent reported a significant improvement in their quality of life
- An 84 percent reduction in emergency room visits for respiratory-related symptoms
- An overall decrease of work and school days lost due to asthma issues
- Patients had a 32 percent decrease in severe asthma attacks.
The procedure is completed using a bronchoscope inserted through the mouth or nose. No incision is necessary. It's a three-step system used to ensure minimal lung damage is made, as only part of the lung is corrected during each stage.

A bronchial thermoplasty does not completely solve asthma-related symptoms and conditions. After surgery, normal medical routines should be continued, as needed, including self-medicating and regular doctor visits.
