Bronchial thermoplasty reduces symptoms among asthma patients

When you suffer from a chronic respiratory disease such as asthma, it can be difficult to keep your symptoms under control, particularly when some of the medications you have to take cause you to experience unpleasant side effects. That being said, researchers from National Jewish Health recently revealed that a non-pharmacologic method of asthma treatment known as bronchial thermoplasty can be incredibly effective at reducing daily symptoms among patients.

Here's a brief explanation of how it works, as reported by ScienceDaily:

"During bronchial thermoplasty, a physician uses a specialized bronchoscope to apply radio frequency energy to heat the airways. The treatment is done in three separate procedures approximately three weeks apart, and reduces smooth muscle surrounding the airways, which can constrict and reduce airflow in asthma."

According to the National Jewish Health research, the number of asthma patients who suffered from severe symptoms dropped from 52 percent to 31 percent in the year after being treated with bronchial thermoplasty, then fell even lower to 29 percent in the five-year period following the treatment. There was also a significant decrease in the number of patients who were admitted to the emergency room for asthma-related complications.

If you're one of the millions of people in the United States who has asthma, you may want to speak with your doctor about alternative treatments like bronchial thermoplasty.
