Chemicals in black currants may alleviate asthma symptoms

Statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that there are 18.9 million adults and 7.1 million children in the United States who have been diagnosed with asthma. While there are a number of effective medicinal treatments for this chronic respiratory disease, many people prefer to take a more natural approach. Fortunately for these individuals, researchers in New Zealand recently found that natural chemicals found in black currants could help alleviate asthma symptoms.

"The new research shows certain anthocyanins present in black currant are important in controlling inflammation in the lung, but more importantly it is the ratio of these anthocyanins rather than presence or absence of them that makes black currants a healthy fruit," said Dr. Roger Hurst, leader of the study, in a press statement.

Inflammation is one of the main physiological reactions people have when they suffer from asthma. This reaction can make it difficult for these individuals to breathe, which can cause them to have mild to severe asthma attacks.

So, what's next now that researchers have made this link between black currants and reduced inflammation?

"We may be able to develop foods based on the correct balance of these compounds that can be consumed as safer, natural alternatives to assist conventional drug treatments," explained Dr. Hurst.
