Study: Asthma patients may be too accepting of their symptoms

When you suffer from a chronic disease such as asthma, it can be all too easy to become complacent about your daily symptoms, accepting the fact that you are forced to deal with them and neglecting to take advantage of certain treatments that may be available.

According to medwireNews, a recent study conducted in the United Kingdom reveals that people who have asthma may "overestimate their asthma control." The source states that of the 1,083 adults surveyed, 79 percent reported "good" or "very good" asthma control in spite of the fact that 58 percent of them said they suffer from symptoms on a regular basis.

"It may be time for a radical rethink about how asthma is managed in primary care," wrote study authors Monica Fletcher and David Hiles, as noted by the news outlet. "Patients' needs and behaviors are continually changing, and personalized care (including regular asthma reviews and [personal asthma action plans]) is more important than ever,"

If you're one of the millions of individuals in the United States who has been diagnosed with asthma, it is imperative that you see a specialist regularly to make sure you're effectively treating this potentially deadly chronic respiratory disease.
