Supplement your allergy strategy

Allergens don't just come in one type or delivery method so you shouldn't just rely on one form of allergy defense to keep your reactions under control.

Although it's good to have a basic strategy when deploying allergy products in your home to combat the threat of allergens, it's still a good idea to diversify depending on the potential irritants. For instance, if you're using a hypoallergenic vacuum to clean your carpets and upholstered furniture, you should supplement it with an air filter on your windows or a whole house air purifier.

In your bedroom, the strategy you employ should also include multiple measures. A 2003 study in Holland where 280 patients with known allergies experienced a reduction of dust mite exposure also concluded that additional steps need to be taken.

"You cannot use covers by themselves to avoid allergy-triggers, which is routinely done by patients with dust mite allergies," said Roy Gerth van Wijk, MD, PhD, researcher of the Dutch study on WebMD. "I still advise covers as a part of an allergy control program, provided that patients are motivated to take other measures."

Hypoallergenic mattress covers and sheets all do a great job of locking in dust mites that may already be in the bed and keeping new allergens out. To supplement this you should be sure to regularly launder your sheets, though you shouldn't remove the mattress cover as often as the other bedding in order to keep the seal in effect. When cleaning around the house, use only cleaning agents that trap dust instead of releasing loose particles into the air. This includes using hypoallergenic filter vacuums that trap far smaller particles than regular vacuums.

Whatever your strategy for making your house allergen-free, you should always be sure to supplement it with other measures. On Allergybegone.com you'll find a variety of products like allergy bedding and air filters to help you do just that.
