Most any expectant mom will tell you that what they put into their body is just about the most important consideration that they make in the course of the day. That's because they know that whatever they eat, their little one is eating too. While scientists have been doing research on a variety of foods, medicines and liquids that ladies consume while pregnant and the impact that they can have on their budding baby, a recent study examined connections between a certain drug used in asthma treatment care and the impact the drug had on the development of fetuses.
In their study, researchers looked at 191 pregnant women – with a mean age of 30.1 years – who had been entered into an ongoing pregnancy registry and had received at least one dose of omalizumab within eight weeks before conception or during the pregnancy. The primary outcome was determined by live birth rates, elective terminations, congenital anomalies and stillbirths. Scientists found that 188 women had been exposed in their first trimester.
The study recorded 156 live births of the 160 infants (which boasted four sets of twins), one fetal death, 11 spontaneous abortions and one elective termination, according to the report.
Of the single infants that were born, 22 were born prematurely, and 10.9 percent of the infants were classified as small for gestational age.
"The prevalence of major congenital defects in [the registry] continues to be no higher than those reported in the general population with asthma," the scientists concluded. "Omalizumab does not appear to increase the risk of preterm birth or [small for gestational age] infants beyond that seen in the general asthma population."
While this study resulted in a positive outcome for moms who have asthma, not all research comes up with such hopeful outlooks.
