Winter holidays bring Christmas tree allergies

Christmas trees can trigger a slew of allergies.

This season is famous for spreading holiday cheer and generosity. But it is also notorious for as being one of the most popular times of year to share colds and suffer from allergies.

Once the holidays come around, many homeowners begin to decorate for Christmas, bringing in trees, garlands and other external elements to their houses. They also take out boxes of decorations that have been sitting in the garage or attic all year long. This can be detrimental to their overall health as these triggers can cause substantial reactions for those who are prone to winter allergies.

One of the primary causes for allergies at this time of year is the Christmas tree. This is largely because the pine scent is overpowering for some people and the sap that is present on live firs tends to cause contact reactions for people with sensitive skin. According to AFC Doctors Express, "Christmas Tree Syndrome" is a real issue for people and can result in runny noses, itchy eyes and other symptoms that are similar to the common cold.

According to Consumer Affairs contributor, Mark Huffman, "Sometimes the reaction doesn't occur right away. Within two weeks of bringing a live tree into a home mold counts can rapidly rise. The company cites research done at State University of New York which found that 70 percent of the molds found in live Christmas trees can set off reactions like severe asthma attacks, fatigue and sinus congestion."
