How to avoid common holiday allergies

Holiday decorations are enough to have some people experiencing allergy symptoms.

For those of us who suffer from asthma and allergy symptoms, this time of year can be one of the worst. While pollen allergy sufferers may be excited for the cold weather reprieve from their seasonal allergies, spending time indoors with family and friends during the holidays may open people up to new and different triggers and symptoms.

Holiday decorations alone are enough to have many people using their inhalers and battling congestion.

Many families light scented candles and spray their homes with fragrant scents, both of which can result in shortness of breath, coughing and other signs of asthma. Christmas trees also arrive with a slew of allergy triggers, as the pine scent can incite allergic reactions. Additionally, each tree could potentially contain mold spores, which can be an issue for those prone to mold allergies. Many industry professionals recommend opting for an artificial tree, or if need be, drying and shaking out the tree before you bring it into your home.

"Visiting friends and family during the holidays means travel for many of us," writes Dr. Mona Mangat, a contributor for the Tampa Bay Times. "If you'll be staying at a hotel, look for one with allergy-friendly rooms. These rooms usually are farthest from hotel pools, often are carpet-free and sometimes have dust mite encasements on the beds."

She recommends bringing your own hypoallergenic bedding if you plan to stay with relatives or family friends.

It is also important to be on the lookout for potential food allergy triggers so that you don't have an episode during what's supposed to be a time of celebration!
