If you suffer from severe allergic reactions, you probably carry an EpiPen with you wherever you go. Now, Aterica Digital Health has developed an EpiPen case that will contact your family when you're experiencing an attack.
EpiPens are devices that inject a dose of life-saving epinephrine into an individual's thigh, opening up the person's airways and constricting their blood vessels to provide enough time to transport the patient to a hospital.
The Veta Smart Case works by connecting to an app on the patient's smartphone, which then sends a message to the person's registered emergency contacts, alerting family to the fact that the individual has suffered an allergic reaction. The message includes the location of the patient, so medical services can arrive as quickly as possible.
A few minutes after the automatic messages have been sent to the registered contact list, the device will send a message to the patient. If the patient doesn't answer immediately, the case will start emitting a loud verbal warning to bystanders that the individual is experiencing a medical emergency. It will also communicate instructions for how to use the EpiPen for those who aren't familiar with the devices.
Additionally, the device has temperature sensors to monitor the effectiveness of the medicine, and sends the owner a message when it needs to be replaced. There is also a deactivate button if the case was opened accidentally, and Find-Me pings are emitted to help locate lost devices. The Veta Smart Case is expected to become available in fall of this year.
