3 tips for spring cleaning with allergies

Don't let spring cleaning stir up your allergy symptoms.

If you've found yourself feeling allergic at home over the winter, now is the time to get rid of all those allergens that can build up during the cold months with a vigorous spring cleaning session. However, sometimes the very cleaning that makes allergy sufferers feel better later can stir up allergens that make the whole thing a miserable process. Here are some tips for spring cleaning without making your allergies worse:

  • Know your triggers. As always, the key to managing your allergy symptoms is to know which substances trigger them. If you have a dust or dust mite allergy, you might want to wear a face mask while cleaning in dusty areas, while if pet dander is your main trigger, be especially careful when cleaning out pets' beds and the rooms where they spend most of their time.
  • Ditch the feather duster. Feather dusters don't actually get rid of dust, they just stir it up into the air so that it settles in a different place, aggravating allergy symptoms in the process. A much better and more efficient way of getting rid of dust is to use a damp microfiber cloth.
  • Focus on the bedroom. Your bedroom is one of the places that you spend the most time in, and the bed can become a locus of allergens over the course of a long winter. It's a good idea to purchase anti-allergy bedding so that once you finish cleaning in the bedroom, you can be sure that the bed will stay clean.
