Don't let allergies control you this summer. Instead, take control of your allergies. The best way to do this is to prepare prior to spending time in an environment where allergens are heavy. Adhere to the following tips to ensure you have an enjoyable, allergy free summer.
1. Schedule an appointment with your primary care physician
If you are highly allergic to tumbleweed and will be traveling to an area high in the allergen, ask your physician the steps you need to take to minimize a reaction. The best advice is to wait until tumbleweed's peak season passes, but sometimes that's unfeasible.
2. Don't forget your allergy medicines
This should be a no brainer, but how many times do you travel and forget something at home? Don't let that "something" be your allergy medicine. If it's prescribed, you'll likely have difficulty obtaining the medicine if you do forget it.
Further, when you pack allergy medicine always remember to pack a little extra just in case you lose some of it. Even better, if you have two sets of luggage, store the needed amount of medicine in one bag and the same amount in another. This prevents all of your allergy medicine from being lost all at once.
3. Research!
Airlines and restaurants have allergy policies. There's a great chance your hotel does, as well. Before traveling, call each place and notify them of your allergies. Then ask them if there is any way they can accommodate you to make your stay more comfortable.
For example, if you're staying at a campground and your allergic to dogs, the facility could move your site to an area where there are no dogs. FARE also brings up a great point when they note, "when booking your flight, notify the reservation agent of your food allergy." Ask them if they can forward your information along to the gate agent, food services and flight crew.
