The holidays are a time of giving, but we could do without allergies giving us headaches and making us sneeze and wheeze. Although pollen and ragweed season is over, allergies still affect millions of people.
People often have to deal with pet dander, mold and dust mites. We explore some of the reasons these allergies tend to be more aggressive during the holiday season than other times of year.
Pets
People are allergic to pet dander. Pets love to socialize like you do, and they're more likely to be inside than outside during the holidays. This is one of the main reasons you're more likely to suffer from pet allergies. To manage pet allergies, try keeping their fur or hair short and regularly clean your home of pet hairs.
Mold
Mold loves the holidays just like you do and for very similar reasons. You enjoy your Christmas tree? Mold does too. Mold, often invisible to the naked eye, loves damp evergreen needles like on wreaths, garlands and trees. These objects provide mold with the perfect place to grow.
To prevent mold from ruining your holiday spirit, we suggest purchasing fake Christmas trees and wreaths.
Dust mites
Dust mites can affect us at any time of year, but they're more aggravating during the holidays because the air is damper. We also tend to spend more time in other people's dusty rooms. If you have to stay in a hotel room, we advise you to bring your own allergy bedding. These include allergy-free pillow covers, mattress covers and allergy travel kits.
