Allergy season isn't over just because plants aren't in bloom. While spring, summer and fall allergies tend to receive most of the press, winter allergies are just as aggressive. And, because they tend to make back page news, you'd never know they're coming. That's why we're here: to tell you how to defend yourself from winter allergies.
Because you're indoors most of the time, you'll be more exposed to mold, dust mites and animal dander than you are in the summer. Your windows will also be closed, ensuring these allergens stay put. Here are the first two of four ways to defend yourself against allergies such as dust mites and dust.
1. Make your bedroom allergen-free
Dust mites love the bedroom. In fact, according to researchers, about 1.5 million live in your bed every night. And you thought you were home alone!
If you consistently wake up with a stuffy nose, there's a good chance dust mites may be the culprit. Purchase dust mite and allergen resistant pillow covers and sheets. Also, here's a fun, easy tip that won't cost you money: don't make your bed. Dust mites thrive in dark, moist places, such as under your covers. An unmade bed exposes these mites to air and sunlight, causing mites to dehydrate and die.
2. Change filters
Make sure your HVAC system uses clean, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters. You can even use these filters to capture allergens as they float around your home.
