8 ways to keep your workout routine during allergy season: Part 1

Working out can actually reduce your allergy symptoms.

If you're one of the millions of Americans who suffered from allergies last year, you know how much they can disrupt your daily routine. You can't open the windows. You have to run to your car to avoid breathing in pollen and you can't sit near windows at work. And, if you regularly work out, forget going to the gym or taking a jog outside.

If you want to avoid a repeat of 2015, here are some ways you can better manage allergies while working out:

1. Stay inside during peak hours

Pollen count is highest between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., so stay inside during this time period. If you like to jog, do so in the early morning before work or late in the evening after you return home. If this isn't an option, you could try finding a local gym that keeps its windows closed and uses an HVAC system.

2. Keep your shoes at the door

Even if your shoes aren't dirty, keep them at the door when you enter your home. They could be full of hard-to-see pollen, which, as you might expect, contributes to your allergy symptoms.

3. Eat Greek yogurt

Make Greek yogurt part of your dietary plan. It contains "friendly" bacteria called Lactobacillus casei that helps prevent the immune system from overreacting to pollen and other allergens.

4. Work out

Don't stop working out! Doing so directs blood flow away from your nose to other parts of the body that need it most. This can help clear up allergy symptoms.
