"The pollen that grows at the top of each blade of grass is released into the air in the late spring and early summer," states the source. "That pollen continues to grow and, in the case of the Coachella Valley, is released en masse when grass — particularly with the extreme number of golf courses we have — is cut down completely to prepare for winter seeding."
So, what does this mean for local residents who are plagued with allergies?
The bad news is that experts don't have a lot of advice to offer, notes the news outlet. If you live in an area where grass scalping is a common October occurrence, your best bet may be to reduce the amount of time you spend outside. This is especially important for young children, who may have particularly severe reactions.
When you get home from work at the end of the day, it's a good idea to take a shower and change your clothes. That way you're not tracking grass pollen through the house with you. You also may want to consider investing in effective allergy control products for your home, such as whole house air purifiers and hypoallergenic bedding.
