Don’t let allergies or asthma stop you from running a marathon

If you're one of the millions of Americans who has asthma, you may think that the idea of running a marathon seems crazy. However, a group of inspiring individuals who suffer from chronic respiratory conditions plan to do just that at this weekend's 38th annual Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C.

According to a press release from the Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA), 50-year-old Tony Cook of Alexandria, Virginia, had such bad asthma that he had to quit his job to focus on his health. But, after undergoing a new procedure called Bronchial Thermoplasty, his quality of life has improved so much that he's been able to take up running.

This Sunday, Cook will be joined by others who suffer from allergies and asthma to raise awareness of their conditions on behalf of AANMA.

"Tony and other Team AANMA members are inspiring examples of what people with asthma, exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) and allergies can accomplish," said Tonya Winders, AANMA chief operating officer, in a press statement. "With an accurate diagnosis, a comprehensive strategy to manage symptoms and a determination to succeed, running a marathon is well within reach. Team AANMA's support for allergy and asthma will help others achieve their goals."
