If you're one of the millions of people who suffer from seasonal allergies, you'll be happy to hear that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just approved the first-ever pill for grass pollen allergies. For many, this will be a preferable alternative to painful allergy shots that can only be administered in a doctor's office.
According to the Boston Globe, the new pill, which goes by the name of Oralair, should be taken once daily starting approximately four months before the onset of the grass pollen season and lasting until allergy season is over. The source reports that the pill is designed to rapidly dissolve when it's placed under the tongue, making it easy for anyone to take. It has been shown to treat and prevent sneezing, running nose, congestion, watery eyes and other irritating symptoms caused by pollen allergies.
"While there is no cure for grass pollen allergies, they can be managed through treatment and avoiding exposure to the pollen," Dr. Karen Midthun, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement. "The approval of Oralair provides an alternative to allergy shots that must be given in a health care provider's office."
Seasonal allergy sufferers are encouraged to speak with their physicians about Oralair to determine if this is the right treatment for them.
