Can allergies make you sick?

Allergies may leave your body vulnerable to other diseases.

Do you tend to get sick a lot from the spring until the fall? And do you also suffer from allergies? If so, there could be a reason why you're constantly reaching for the Mucinex and allergy medication. Allergies may be causing you to become sick, according to Heidi Mitchell, writing for The Wall Street Journal.

Dr. Neil Kao, a fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology noted that your body reacts by sending out white blood cells to "test" materials in the body it deems foreign. If so it'll destroy these foreign bodies, according to Mitchell. Pollen and dust are actually substances white blood cells should leave alone, but for some reason a person's immune system overreacts.

"Your body thinks the allergens are the front-line, and they attack," Kao said. "It's bad. It can feel like you didn't get a good night's sleep every day, all season." If you don't have seasonal allergies, he adds, "you can't appreciate how bad it feels."

When the body reacts to pollen, its defenses are actually vulnerable to other invading, more harmful viruses or bacteria. Kao noted that by controlling allergies, people are able to better manage possible sicknesses that typically follow suit.

To do so, take your allergy medicine regularly, stay indoors when pollen counts are high and clean your home and office space constantly.
