It's never easy dealing with allergies, but they're a particular nuisance for kids when they go back to school. While class is still a couple of months away, parents need to prepare diligently. Janna Tuck, spokesperson for the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), said that while children going back to school can be exciting, concerns linger if kids have allergies.
"Many parents look forward to their child returning to the classroom," said Tuck, according to The Repository. "But for parents of children with allergies or asthma, school raises questions about conditions that can't be controlled or monitored. They want to make sure their child is safe, has adequate resources and that systems are in place if they have an asthma or allergy attack."
Here are three ways to keep your kids allergy-free while they're at school:
1. Understand procedures
If your child has allergies, do they need to sign forms or do you need to inform the school nurse? It's best to keep administrators aware so they can act accordingly if your child has an allergy attack.
2. Administer allergy medicine regularly
If a doctor has prescribed your child allergy medicine, it's important they take it regularly. It takes time for medicine to build up in a person's body. In fact, if they start using it now, their body should have established a strong allergy defense, by the time they go to school.
3. Have a plan
What happens if your child suffers an allergy attack? What if they're struggling to concentrate in school because of pollen? Answering these kinds of questions will enable you to form a plan to help your child during an emergency.
