Your typical weekday morning may consist of rolling out of bed around 6 a.m., getting ready for work, eating breakfast and then rushing out the door. But I feel like we're forgetting something.
Oh, that's right. In between getting ready for work and eating cereal, you're sneezing and coughing. Every morning you find yourself asking the same thing: Did I devour more cereal or allergens for breakfast?
Are allergies really worse in the morning, and, if so, why?
According to research published in Current Medical Research and Opinion, allergies are indeed worse as the sun rises. In a study of 2,000 people, researchers asked participants a variety of questions about their allergy symptoms, including when they were worse. Over 72 percent of people said they suffered from sneezing, stuffy noses (62 percent), red and itchy eyes (63 percent), wheezing (40 percent) and coughing (53 percent) most often before breakfast. The researcher's intensity graph indicated 40 percent of patients said their allergies were worse before their morning breakfast.
While that study took place nearly 40 years ago, allergy specialists today are still asking why allergies are more problematic in the morning.
Rodney Taylor, M.D., nose and throat specialist at the University of Maryland Medical Center, said, according to ABC News, that allergies could be worse in the a.m. for many reasons. He said some allergies, like pet dander and dust mites, are commonly found in the home, and, in general, pollen levels are highest in the morning. He also noted that exposure can play a factor in how someone reacts to allergies.
