Do your kids love spring? Do they also suffer from allergies? The two just don't mix together. Here are four tips to help your children defend themselves from irritating allergies this year:
1. Keep all the windows closed
Your home can only protect your children from seasonal allergies if the windows are closed, otherwise they might as well be outside breathing in pollen. Keeping the windows closed also reduces the amount of time you spend cleaning, which, in turn, reduces the amount of dust flying in the air.
Along with keeping the windows closed in your home, shut them in your car while you're driving down the road. You can't out-drive allergies!
2. Don't clean when they're home
If you did leave your windows open, you may have noticed a spread of allergens blanketing furniture and bedding. This becomes a major problem at all times of the day. Imagine having to sleep in that!
You'll have to wash and vacuum your home to rid it of allergens, but don't do it when your children are home. Wait until they go to school.
3. Visit a doctor
Before your children start taking allergy medicine, you need to understand what they're allergic to. Take them to their physician, who might be able to administer an allergy test, or to an allergy specialist. They'll provide the test, which consists of a few pricks of the arm, and give you detailed instructions on how to manage allergies.
4. Understand that timing is everything
It's best to get a jump on allergies before they begin to affect your body. This means taking your kids to an allergy specialist and administering them medicine well before they begin to sneeze and cough. Their immune systems need to build up a defense to allergens, and this takes time.
