6 ways you didn't realize you could protect yourself from spring allergies

Enjoy spring this year. Wearing glasses not only looks fashionable, it can help manage pollen.

Don't dread spring this year. Follow these six allergy-fighting tips:

1. Wear sunglasses
Sunglasses don't only protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, they also protect them from allergens. Wear large sunglasses or ones that fit around your eyes for ultimate protection.

2. Reduce inflammation in your body
Your body's allergy reaction is basically an accidental inflammatory response. A natural way to help reduce inflammation is by including more leafy vegetables into your diet. So, for every steak you have, have a big bowl of salad to go along with it.

3. Use a neti pot
Neti pots are much more uncomfortable to get used to than they are to actually use, and that's only because most people have never seen one before. They help rinse out nasal packages, which, in turn, help manage your allergy symptoms. The best time to use it is when you've been directly exposed to allergens, such as while exercising outside or dusting the house.

4. Don't exercise outside…
…during the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. when pollen levels are at their highest. Instead, do so really early in the morning or in the evening. You should also avoid running immediately after a rain storm if mold bothers you.

5. But don't forget to exercise!
While we recommend not exercising outside during certain times of the day, that doesn't mean you should avoid exercising. Doing so helps prevent allergens from becoming stagnant in your blood system, which can further irritate your body.

6. Keep your windows closed
If you have an HVAC system, take advantage of it. When we're sneezing and wheezing, we want fresh air, but keeping your windows open only makes these allergy symptoms worse.
