4 allergy-controlling techniques that we always forget

How do you manage your allergies? If you're struggling, think outside the box.

If you lose the battle against allergies every year, then maybe you're fighting them wrong. The following are four allergy-fighting techniques that we often forget exist:

1. Use eye drops
Allergies, such as pollen, dust and pet dander, cause our eyes to burn, feel itchy and swell. Along with taking over-the-counter or prescription medicines, you could use eye drops to relieve these allergy symptoms. However, keep in mind, not all eye drops manage allergies. For example, eye drops that relieve redness may not help the itchiness. It's best to talk to an allergy specialist prior to using them.

2. Keep your nasal passages clear
Once allergens build up in your nose, they cause an irritating histamine response. The best way to prevent this from happening is to keep your sinuses clear. Consider using a neti pot or other sinus cleansing methods regularly throughout the allergy season. And, if you suffer from mold, dust or pet dander allergies, we recommend trying this technique in the winter as well.

3. Wash your coats, hats and boots
We always remember to wash normal articles of clothing, such as our pants and shirts, but how often do we give our boots, jackets and hats a good cleansing? Most of the time we just throw them in the closet. Take time to wash these articles of clothing as well because they tend to build up dust, dirt and allergens.

4. Use natural medicines
If prescription or over-the-counter medicines aren't doing the trick, try using alternative allergy medicines. We already mentioned in neti pots, which are containers used to clear sinus passages. Others include quercetin, butterbur and stinging nettle.
