If you suffer from allergies — seasonal or otherwise — you know how difficult it can be to go about your day. If you're thinking about getting away this winter to escape the allergy blues, make sure you're well-prepared. Not prepping beforehand can actually cause you to book a flight to an allergy-infested region!
Here are a couple of things allergy sufferers should know when traveling:
1. Research the destination
Years ago many people escaped allergies by moving to the southwest portions of the U.S. These areas were recommended for allergy sufferers because it was generally void of allergy-producing plants. But not anymore. Droves of people moved to the southwest but took with them invasive species. "They brought the plants [and pollen] with them," said Stanley Fineman, an allergist in Atlanta, Georgia.
Before traveling somewhere, research the area and check monthly average pollen levels. Adjust your travel plans accordingly.
2. Talk to your doctor
Before traveling you should visit your doctor or allergy specialist. He or she can offer allergy advice, refill prescriptions and administer allergy shots, if necessary. If you have asthma, make sure you also refill your inhaler. Obtaining or refilling these medicines may be difficult when you're on the road.
