5 outdoor exercise tips for allergy sufferers

If you like to exercise outside but suffer from allergies, it's important to know how to manage them.

If you suffer from allergies, exercising outdoors can be difficult. No matter the time of year, you'll have to deal with a number of different allergies ranging from spring pollen to fall ragweed. Even in the winter, you'll have to manage mold spores.

To help you exercise outdoors without constantly coughing, wheezing and sneezing, follow these tips:

1. Don't work out during the day: Most allergies are aggressive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you like to run, do so early in the morning or late in the evening. You could also run inside on a treadmill. If you also suffer from mold allergies, exercise in the morning.

2. Check the weather: Always check to see what the pollen level is before you head outside. Usually, pollen levels are high on warm, breezy mornings. Work out outside when it's cooler and after it rains.

3. Choose a less stressful activity: The harder you work out, the faster you breath. The faster you breath, the more allergens you'll intake. Avoid this by exercising indoors when pollen counts are high. If you need to exercise outside, participate in a less strenuous activity such as yoga.

4. Protect yourself from the cold: Cold air can irritate sensitive lungs. For people who have to deal with allergies, make sure to bundle up and cover your nose and mouth. This will help warm the air before it enters your lungs, ensuring they get less irritated.

5. Protect your eyes: On cold winter days, your eyes can become dry. If you suffer from allergies, this can be a catastrophic situation. Make sure to protect them if you're heading outside to exercise.
