Our immune system plays a major role in instigating allergy symptoms

Fall allergies affect millions of Americans, and it could be because of their immune system.

Fall allergy season has been in swing for well over a month now, and many people across the U.S. are already ready for it to be over.

There are a number of ways you can control allergies, such as purchasing a dehumidifier, humidifier or a better air conditioning unit. However, it's also important to understand why they affect you in the first place.

While doctors have discovered what triggers allergies and how to inhibit them, for years they have been trying to figure out why people suffer from them at all. They may finally have an answer. According to a computer model, it appears that an immune response, which normally fights certain parasites, is being misdirected to activate allergy symptoms.

Nick Furnham of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said the immune system targets allergens as it would certain parasites. Part of the reason is because many of these parasites are common in many parts of the developed world.

"It's a very aggressive response, with the idea to quickly get rid of the parasite, and it's mediated by an antibody called IgE," said Furnham. "This is the same branch of the immune system which is elicited when you have an allergic response."

While more research is needed into how the immune system affects or triggers allergies, for now, the best thing to do is to manage them.
