Remember to protect your dog from fall allergies

Fall allergy season is in full swing for most of the country, which means people, and dogs, are suffering from ragweed.

Our pets are just like us! Well, kind of. At least when it comes to allergies. Fall allergy season is in full swing for most of the country, which means people, and dogs, are suffering from ragweed.

Ragweed is a seasonal allergy that affects close to 20 percent of Americans. The 17 species of ragweed are all very aggressive and can produce up to 1 billion grains of pollen during its lifespan. If you think you and your dog can escape ragweed grains, think again. They can extend out 400 miles from its source and up to 2 miles into the atmosphere.

Dog allergies are not rare. In fact, according to Matthew Demey, DVM of Seven Hills Veterinary Hospital in Colorado, "It's actually an incredibly common thing this time of year. It's just like hay fever in people. They can be allergic to any airborne allergens."

Demey goes on to say that, compared to people, it can sometimes be difficult to tell whether a pet is having an allergic reaction. But there are some strong warning signs.

"They can start licking their feet, shaking their head and scratching ears…anywhere they are itchy or scratchy are the big signs we see," said Demey.

It's extremely important to address your dog's allergies immediately. Don't wait! Their skin can become quickly inflamed and the more they scratch or bite, the more likely they could break the skin. This could cause it to become infected.

To treat your dog's allergies, bring him or her to the veterinarian. He or she can test your dog for up to 30 allergens at once which makes the visit less time consuming and stressful.

To manage your pet's allergies, the doctor will likely administer specially made serums or oral pills and shampoos. However, there are some things you can do to help both you and your dog better defend against the airborne substances.

Protect your home from allergens by keeping windows closed during peak hours of the day, using the AC if it gets too hot and purchasing a dehumidifier or humidifier from Allergy Be Gone to reduce the amount of mold spores that may be present. Also make sure that  your AC vents are clean and keep your home always scrubbed down and clean. Prevention is a key point to allergy management.
