14 ways to protect yourself from fall allergies: Part One

Take control of fall allergies by preparing properly.

If you suffered from spring allergies and think the nightmare is over, think again. While spring pollen counts may be down, ragweed and mold season is here, and it won't go away until the first frost which is a couple of months from now.

If you suffer from allergies and want to enjoy watching the leaves change as you sip on apple cider, not all is lost. Here are some ways you can protect yourself:

  1. Wear sunglasses: Wearing big glasses that protect around your eyes can better block mold spores or ragweed.
  2. Don't hang clothes outside: If you do this, you could involuntarily bring them into your house! Keep allergens outside. Instead of line drying clothes, simply put them in the dryer or hang them to dry somewhere in your home.
  3. Stop by the doctor's office: A doctor can test whether you're allergic to mold spores or ragweed
  4. Begin treatments early: It takes awhile for allergy treatments to build up in your immune system. Start them well before the onset of symptoms.
  5. Shower/shampoo daily: There is no better way to keep away from allergens than to rinse them off of you. You don't want to go to bed at night breathing them in.
  6. Care for your eyes: Earlier we mentioned wearing sun glasses to protect your eyes from allergens. Consider using a gentle, tear-free baby shampoo to wash above your eyelids. This will keep allergens away from them.
  7. Inspect your home: If your home is leaking water, mold is likely to grow. Make sure all leaks are repaired before winter arrives.
