Consider allergies when planning to move to a new state

When moving to a new state, consider the severity of allergens there.

Hiring an agent. Getting prequalified and preapproved. Searching for a home. Purchase offers. Negotiations. Home inspections.

These are all obvious parts of the home buying process. However, did you ever think about researching types and severity of allergies in your new location?

It's something you may not normally think about, but it could make or break your dream home experience. In many parts of the country, ragweed is beginning to appear. While it's relatively early in the year for ragweed to be floating around, the Northeast and Midwest are being hit exceptionally hard because of the wild, prolonged winter that engulfed both regions.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates that ragweed plants can produce up to 1 billion pollen grains and affects nearly 20 percent of Americans. It peaks around early September and sticks around until the first frost hits.

However, for areas that don't get frost, ragweed can be a year-round nightmare. Dr. David Shulan, former VP of the Certified Allergy and Asthma Consultants in Albany, NY said he noticed a high amount of ragweed in Boynton Beach, FL and surrounding areas.

"The traditional time frames for ragweed for the rest of the country may not necessarily apply here," Shulan noted. "Around here, we don't often get a frost."

Shulan's observations bring up a good point homeowners should take note of. If you plan on moving from, say, New England to Florida and suffer from ragweed allergies, you could be dealing with them year-round instead of seasonally.
