Are doctors changing their approach to allergy relief? Some are and many others may follow according to U.S. News. It's been one of the worst allergy seasons on record in the U.S., which is prompting doctors to figure out more aggressive treatment options.
There are a few common ways to help manage your allergies in the comforts of your home. Updating or cleaning your air filters, purchasing a new air conditioner, dehumidifier or humidifier can all help reduce the amount of allergens invading your residence.
However, sometimes further steps need to be taken to help manage asthma and allergy symptoms. That's where sinus surgery comes into play, which helps remove sinus tissue that obstructs breathing and ultimately improves nasal drainage. Often, people opt for this extreme solution when they suffer from sever sinus inflammation and asthma.
Now, while sinus surgery has long been known to help sufferers, new research indicates people who receive this procedure earlier rather than later have a better chance of beating allergies. A new report presented at the American Rhinologic Society specifically suggests that sufferers who received surgery less than two years after a sinusitis diagnosis resulted in a reduction in asthma in the long term. That's compared to people who received the surgery four to five years after a diagnosis, which resulted in worse symptoms.
While the jury is still out on this approach, it won't be surprising if in the next few years doctors get more aggressive with allergies and opt for surgery sooner.
