Fifteen to 30 percent of people with allergies are allergic to dogs. This is a troubling statistic, because six out of 10 people in the United States come in contact with this common house hold pet regularly.
This is disappointing for many allergic to dogs, because they can't partake in the joy of bringing one into their family without discomfort. And there are plenty of reasons to own one:
- First, they make us laugh more. According to a study published in the journal "Society & Animals," people who own dogs laugh more than those who don't.
- Second, people are more social when they live with a dog. Scientists at the University of Liverpool and the University of Bristol found that dog owners were more likely to network than those who didn't own one.
- Finally, dogs may help lower the risk of people developing asthma and other allergies, such as those that stem from pollen and dust.
So, is there any hope for dog lovers who are allergic to the animal? Simply put, yes. Look for dogs listed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) that do well with allergy sufferers. Interestingly enough, you'll find the dogs listed have long and short hair because it's not the hair that produces allergies, but instead their saliva, skin and proteins. These substances often get caught on their hair and fur, which they then shed. Finding dogs that don't shed is a great way to ensure you can benefit from everything a dog offers without sneezing through every Frisbee playing or grooming session.
