Seasonal allergies affect more than just humans

Protect your pet from seasonal allergen irritants.

According to Fox 31 Denver, humans are not the only ones that can be affected by allergies. Pets such as dogs and cats can also suffer from a range of symptoms.

One veterinary clinic, Alameda East Vet Clinic of Denver, sees thousands of dogs suffering from allergies each year.

Food allergies only make up 15 percent of pet allergens. The rest can be attributed to seasonal issues. Just like humans, allergies that pets can suffer vary depending on location, breed and personal issues.

Allergens can affect five places on a pet's body including:

  • Coat: Your pet's fur can become discolored or patchy from excessive licking.
  • Ears: Both ears can become red and hot to the touch with a waxy discharge. This is usually accompanied by an odor.
  • Face: The muzzle, chin or eyes may appear to be littered with bumps as well as patches from hair loss.
  • Feet: Irritated feet can become red, with hives and bumps forming between the toes. Fur here can also be discolored due to excessive chewing and biting.
  • Skin: Red skin or new scabs can be a sign of irritation. Scratching at the sides, elbows, groin or stomach can cause bleeding or a skin infection.

If you pet is showing one or all of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with your local vet for treatment options.

If your pet is constantly scratching or licking, this could cause him or her to shed more, increasing your own allergy symptoms. Pet dander and saliva are two of the most common causes of human  allergies. Protect yourself and your pet with allergy awareness today.
