Spring allergies could be worse than ever this year

This year's harsh winter could make spring allergies worse than ever.

According to Fox News, this year's long, harsh winter could mean a more extreme spring allergy season.

Trees that would usually have bloomed earlier in the year were delayed because of the inclement weather, meaning they will likely bloom at the same time as grasses and other spring plants start to pollinate. Heavy precipitation in some areas of the country may have also suppressed pollen release earlier in the year. This means we're facing an unusual spike in allergens as the weather warms up.

"People who may have both tree allergies and grass allergies are probably going be doubly impacted," said one doctor in Cleveland, Ohio, "because both of those things are going to be blooming at the same time. The allergy seasons seem to be getting intense in the last few years. We are not quite sure why. We don't know if it's the climate change. It may be."

Melting snow also contributes to dampness and encourages mold growth, which could lead to allergy problems in the spring.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, make sure to shower and change clothes after you come in from the outdoors. This way, you'll remove most of the pollen from your body. Then, close the windows and doors and turn on air conditioning to keep air circulation flowing throughout your home. Finally, taking an antihistamine at night can help ease your symptoms without making you drowsy during the day.
