Recently on the blog, we began to talk about the slew of allergies and asthma-related issues that people can face when they welcome Christmas trees into their homes around the holidays.
Although they are generally an important part of every holiday celebration, there are a number of negative reactions that these types of decorations can cause for allergy sufferers. According to Consumer Affairs contributor, Mark Huffman, there are a number of things to keep in mind regarding the incorporation of live trees into your holiday decor.
Here is what he has to say:
Mold: Live trees naturally have mold spores that easily trigger allergy symptoms. While there are a number of cold-like symptoms floating around this time of year, it is important to be on guard for mold allergens.
Sap: All tree sap contains something called terpene which is known to irritate the skin and mucous membranes. The best way to avoid a reaction from this type of allergen is to wear gloves and long sleeves when you bring the tree indoors.
Spray it: While most people purchase – or cut down – their tree and haul it directly into the house from the car, it is advised that you spray it down with water before bringing it inside. This quick and simple step can remove pollen and mold spores that you would otherwise track into your home.
It is good to keep all of this in mind if you are planning on bringing a live tree into your house this year. However, if someone in your household has severe winter allergies, it may be wise to forego the live decorations and opt for artificial substitutes instead.
