When it comes to keeping ourselves as healthy as possible, here at Allergy Be Gone we generally stick to tried and true methods of asthma and allergy control, but we love hearing and learning about new and exciting ways to treat the diseases that ail us.
One that recently caught our eye was the use of salt therapy.
Many people know that smelling salts have been around for generations. They used to be a common treatment for sports-related head injuries to stimulate players to get back into the game. But why should that work? And why do allergy and asthma sufferers care?
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information and the National Library of Medicine, "Smelling salts are used to arouse consciousness because the release of ammonia (NH3) gas that accompanies their use irritates the membranes of the nose and lungs, and thereby triggers an inhalation reflex. This reflex alters the pattern of breathing, resulting in improved respiratory flow rates and possibly alertness."
With this understanding of the unique treatment, some medical professionals have begun administering the salty aroma as a way of maintaining health and wellness for asthmatics.
At one such location, the Salt Spa Walnut Creek in California, treatment rooms are designed with a thick layer of salt crystals lining the walls and floor and a machine that blows tiny particles of high-grade sodium chloride into the air. Patients are instructed to just lay on the bed in the room and breathe.
One individual who attends weekly, 45-minute sessions at the Salt Spa is a longtime asthmatic and allergy sufferer. Since starting her treatment with the salts, she has been able to reduce her use of decongestants and her corticosteroid inhaler.
This information is an exciting development for people who find it a challenge to breathe easy. If you aren't interested in trying salt therapy, though, don't worry because there are options to make allergy prevention easier. To learn more, visit Allergy Be Gone today!
