Is wool bedding better for you?

Allergy sufferers who deal with dust mite allergies may want to consider switching to wool.

As people welcome cold weather by breaking out their winter gear, down comforters and layers of blankets to help them stay warm, many allergy sufferers are dealing with dust allergies. While some will rejoice as cool weather negates the worry of hay fever or pollen allergies, winter allergens like pet dander, dust mites and mold spores can cause real discomfort for allergy sufferers throughout the colder months.

For these individuals, house dust is a major issue. "House dust is present even in clean homes," writes the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). "Allergenic components of house dust are a major cause of year-round runny or stuffy nose, itchy, watery eyes and sneezing for allergy sufferers. Dust allergy can also make people with asthma experience wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath."

While most doctors will tell you that the best way to deal with these types of allergens is to avoid them altogether, that line of advice isn't always realistic or effective. Instead, some professionals say, it is better to implement products that help you maintain healthy air in your home by preventing allergens altogether.

Recently, TV's Dr Christian Jessen spoke out in support of wool bedding as a great substitute for other products during the winter months. This is because dust mites are unable to live in wool which makes is a great tip for lovers of hypoallergenic bedding.

While wool is a great option for a healthier bedroom environment, it is certainly not the only product that works for allergy sufferers.
