While many allergy sufferers welcome the fall season as a reprieve from the relentless allergens of spring and summer, autumn may be just as harmful for allergy and asthma symptoms, according to recent studies.
Many medical professionals are now saying that fall yard work can stir up mold spores on decaying vegetation that will negatively impact allergy sufferers.
"When you are raking the stuff up, or bagging it, you aerosolize a fair amount of it," Dr. Brenda Guyer, Allergist with Health Partners/Park Nicollet, tells NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis, MN. "You can breathe it in and if you are allergic, it causes congestion and mucous production and sneezing, itchy eyes, allergy misery, basically."
Guyer went on to say that mowing, mulching and mold can impact most anyone – not just allergy prone individuals – and that the best way to avoid these pesky symptoms is to hire out yard work to a third party.
Other helpful practices include changing your clothes when you come inside, showering and swapping out your mattress sheets if you notice any irritation.
She also stated that small mouth and nose masks would not offer as much protection to allergy sufferers as was once thought. In fact, the shields will not actively block out mold spores, and may trap them closer to your face once inside the mask.
