Most asthma sufferers know the impact that pollution can have on the onset and effect of an attack. But what they don't often know is that your everyday exposure to pollutants can have an impact on your day-to-day asthma symptoms, and making small changes can cause a big difference.
A recent study conducted by Michelle North and Anne Ellis of Queen's University, Neil Alexis of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Chris Carlsten of Vancouver General Hospital, found that environmental factors play a large role in the effects felt as a result of asthma.
In the study, a doctor advised a female asthmatic to take a different, less polluted route to work in order to alleviate asthma symptoms. The result of her taking a different route, which ran farther from the highway than the original way she had traveled, was a reduction in inflammation and increased comfort day-to-day.
"This experience shows that allergists can integrate their knowledge of the effects of air pollution into individual patient care, particularly asthma action plans," said the senior researcher on the study, Chris Carlsten, who also acts as a pulmonologist for the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, in an official statement. "Air pollution is known to be associated with worsening asthma symptoms, but sometimes changing routines with regard to exposure to air pollution can have a positive effect."
