They may not be known as man's best friend, but people still love them all the same. Cats are great companions for many people, but they are also a popular cause for allergies among Americans. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), approximately one quarter or the current population is estimated to have an allergy to cat dander.
Now those who want to play with their furry friends without pesky allergies getting in the way are in luck, as scientists believe they have discovered an injection that could relieve allergy symptoms for sufferers.
Benchmark, an England-based company, has announced its partnership with HypoPet to develop a cat allergy vaccine. The drug will neutralize the Fel d 1 protein which is responsible for activating allergy symptoms in humans. HypoPet reports that the protein can be found in the urine and saliva of felines, and with this injection being administered to their furry friends, humans will be less likely to experience symptoms.
According to the official statement of the deal released on the Benchmark website, "The vaccine is the first of its kind and the research of the HypoPet team and proof-of-concept studies have demonstrated its potential to be a unique and effective solution to human cat allergies. Benchmark expects the vaccine to be commercialized within 3-4 years."
