Use caution when driving after taking antihistamines

If you are like thousands of seasonal allergy sufferers, you rely on over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription antihistamines to get you through the spring and summer. But did you know they may impair your ability to drive? According to Everyday Health, one study even found that OTC antihistamines could have as negative an impact on drivers as alcohol.

A recent survey in the United Kingdom found that 44 percent of drivers who use allergy medications confessed to failing to check the warning labels to see if the drugs might hurt their driving ability. A similar study has not been done in the United States recently, but it raises concerns about our road safety as well.

"This widespread lack of awareness among drivers is alarming, suggesting many are unwittingly posing a threat to safety on our roads," road safety advocate Julie Townsend told MSN. "It's a particular concern at this time of year, when huge numbers of people will be using hay fever medicines, some of which can be risky if you drive."

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about driving under the influence of antihistamines. In a news release, FDA official Jane Filie said you may experience slower reaction times, haziness and mild confusion even if you do not feel sleepy. Filie says consumers should always carefully read the "Drug Facts" labels found on medicine bottles. Don't drive or operate heavy machinery if the label warns against those activities. You should also be aware if alcohol, sedatives and/or tranquilizers can exacerbate an antihistamine's side effects.
