Camp teaches kids how to manage asthma

A summer day camp in Abilene, Texas, is teaching kids how to control their asthma, using fun activities and educational exercises. Knowledgeable staffers at The Hendrick Asthma Day Camp work to improve kids' self-esteem and quality of life by teaching them about symptom management, and helping them improve their overall physical endurance. Administrators believe this leads to fewer missed school days and less time spent in doctors' offices and emergency rooms throughout the year.

Organizers state on the camp's website that educating parents is also an important part of their mission, as many mothers and fathers of newly diagnosed young asthma sufferers do not clearly understand the condition. Experts agree that education is key to minimizing asthma's negative effects.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) says that the first step toward asthma management is a proper diagnosis. Asthma and allergies often co-exist, so it's important to take your child to an experienced allergist so he or she can help identify triggers and risk levels.

Your allergist will help you develop a treatment plan that should be shared with your child's pediatrician, school administrators, teachers, babysitters and any other caretakers. This may include long-term medication as well as short-term rescue treatment for alleviating sudden symptoms. He or she will help you identify triggers that your child should avoid, such as certain animals, foods and/or pollens.

Your doctor will likely ask you to get rid of excess clutter in your house, like books and stuffed animals, to minimize the presence of dust and dust mites. You should also consider investing in an allergen air purifier and hypoallergenic bedding to improve your child's symptoms at home.
