An 11-year-old Texas boy recently died from an asthma attack, serving as a reminder of how important it is for people of all ages to properly address this potentially dangerous yet highly treatable chronic respiratory disease.
According to CBS 7, Leo Cano suffered an asthma attack while playing a game of baseball this past weekend. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died later that day. The source reports that this is the third time a local child has died of asthma-related complications in the past three years.
In an interview with the source, Renato Galindo, Pulmonary Patient Educator at Medical Center Hospital, explained that asthma attacks are almost always preventable and that it's important to be able to recognize the symptoms as soon as they begin.
"Look at their chest, are they using every muscle to breathe in?" Galindo said. "If you see hints of blue around their lips, they aren't getting enough oxygen. Once you see all of these signs put together, it's time for action."
With proper treatment, the millions of children who suffer from asthma can continue to do all the things they love and enjoy a great quality of life.
"A child can have an active, productive childhood if we teach their parents and child how to control symptoms," Galindo concluded.
