Plant compounds in flaxseed and soy linked with reduced asthma symptoms

There are plenty of prescription and over-the-counter medications that can help alleviate the symptoms of asthma and prevent people from suffering attacks, but what if you're looking for a more natural treatment for this chronic respiratory disease?

According to MedPage Today, a recent study conducted by researchers at the Massachusetts-based Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard University recently discovered that anti-inflammatory plant and estrogen compounds known as phytoestrogens — which are found in flaxseed and soy — were linked with reduced symptoms of asthma.

The source reports that while no causal relationship has been confirmed, there are simple ways for people to integrate flaxseed and soy — particularly the former — into their diet, and that doing so may be beneficial for those who suffer from asthma.

"One potential criticism of the study is that people who wheeze are generally less healthy, and may be less likely to eat these foods in their diet," said study lead Dr. Jessica Savage at a press conference, as noted by the news outlet. "However, given that the microbiome is so important in converting these foods and converting these chemicals into the phytoestrogens, it's not clear how important that criticism is at this point."
