The erratic weather patterns in Central Texas this year have certainly been interesting. And, according to KEYE TV, an Austin-based news outlet, these quick weather changes are causing many people to begin experiencing spring allergy symptoms much earlier than usual.
The source reports that the combination of moisture pushing pollen into the air and cold temperatures causing nasal passages to swell is making it difficult for residents of Austin and the surrounding area to breathe.
"It seems to be a little more haywire with these quick fluctuations," Dr. Robert Nason, an allergy specialist at St. David's Medical Center, told the news outlet. "You can't really acclimate to it. You think you are getting out of it, but then there's a temperature change or moisture change, and it throws you for a loop again."
Fortunately, there are a few simple ways for people to get their symptoms under control early in the season. WebMD suggests:
• Consulting an allergy specialist for prescription medications
• Installing an allergen air purifier in your home, which works by removing irritants directly from the air
• Keeping an eye on pollen counts and wearing a respirator mask for certain outdoor activities like gardening
• Trying natural remedies, like a neti pot, which flushes your nasal cavities
• Using over-the-counter medications like antihistamines and nasal sprays.
