Weather conditions have certainly been erratic over the past few months, so it's no surprise to hear that spring allergy season is starting early in certain parts of the United States. According to KRQE.com, a New Mexico news outlet, people in Albuquerque are beginning to feel the effects of spring allergies, as pines, conifers and junipers have already begun to pollinate.
The source reports that allergies could worsen depending on the amount of precipitation this spring.
"A wet spring will cause grasses and introduced wind-pollinated weeds to start growing and have allergies starting in may, extending all the way through summer, through fall, until the first frost," Tim Lowrey, a biology professor at University of New Mexico, told the source.
That being said, Albuquerque residents who suffer from spring allergies are advised to be proactive by taking over-the-counter antihistamines, using saline drops and potentially even seeing an allergy specialist in the coming weeks.
"If you're still having itchy, sneezy watery eyes [after taking over-the-counter drugs] and it's bothering you to the point where you can't function at work of school or you can't sleep well, certainly contacting the physician's office is reasonable," suggested Lowrey.
