U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics reveal that 8.2 percent of the adult population in the United States suffer from asthma. Unfortunately, some parts of the country are worse than others for people who suffer from this affliction.
According to ABC 8 News, a Virginia news outlet, Richmond is the asthma capital of the country. A combination of poor air quality, high pollen count and fluctuating temperatures make it difficult for asthmatics to breathe comfortably.
Local resident Diane McClure explained to the source that her asthma symptoms affect her almost every single day — particularly when the weather is cold.
"I check the temperature every morning when I get up to see what the temperature is outside and I don't go outside and when I have to I put a scarf over my mouth," McClure said. "You just don't know. You don't know when you get up in the morning what it's going to be like and whether you're going to be able to go outside."
Fortunately, as the weather warms up, asthmatics should experience some relief. However, they'll still need to worry about the spring allergy season, which is just around the corner.
