Norwegian skier Aksel Lund Svindal recently announced that he would withdraw from his final race at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, reports The Associated Press, and his reason why certainly caught people by surprise.
According to the source, Svindal — who took three medals home from the 2010 Vancouver Games — claims that he has been suffering from allergies that may be due to the poor air quality in Sochi.
"There's a lot of athletes that have some allergy against something here," Svindal said in an interview with the news outlet. "I think it's something from the concrete that's in the air, like some fine dust. When I got here, I felt it, too. The doctors knew exactly what it was, because they gave me allergy medicine right away. It helps, but it's kind of draining."
Svindal's coach explained that the skier had been feeling under the weather for days, adding that withdrawing will enable him to recover and "have some energy left for the rest of the World Cup season."
This story serves as a good reminder that no matter how healthy you are overall, there's still a chance that you could be plagued by allergies. In fact, according to WebMD, one in five people in the United States suffer from this affliction.
