New smartphone game aims to teach kids about managing asthma

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics reveal that there are 7.1 million children in the United States who suffer from asthma. Depending on the severity of each individual case, symptoms of this chronic respiratory disease can range from irritating to deadly, so it's important to find ways to treat these children and ensure that they're doing everything possible to keep symptoms at a minimum.

With this in mind, Boston-based company LifeGuard Games has created a new game that will teach kids how to better manage their asthma. According to MobiHealthNews, the game is called Wellapets and it will be available on iOS and Android devices. Children will have the opportunity to virtually adopt pets to take care of. In addition to feeding and playing with the pets, they'll need to watch out for symptoms of asthma and administer medication as necessary.

"I think doctors see there's value to be gained […] in terms of trying to offer their patients something that's educational that they can use when they're outside of the clinic just to sort of remind them what they're supposed to be doing," LifeGuard Games co-founder and CEO Alexander Ryu told the news outlet. "Doctors see kids coming into the office playing Mom's iPad or Mom's iPhone and they realize this could be an effective channel that they didn't have before."

It's always encouraging to learn about new ways of combating childhood asthma.
